RP-1               Request for Partnership between Wagga Wagga and Koya City in Kurdistan-Iraq

Author:          Elizabeth Cox

Director:       Peter Thompson

Summary:

A request has been received from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Middle East Branch for a partnership with Koya City in Kurdistan-Iraq and Wagga Wagga.

Recommendation

That the committee consider the request for a partnership between Wagga Wagga and Koya City in Kurdistan-Iraq.

Report

The Australian Ambassador to Iraq recently wrote to Council with a request from the Director or the Career Development Directorate at Koya University to establish a friendship city relationship between Koya City in Kurdistan-Iraq and the City of Wagga Wagga.

Koya (population approximately 100,000) is an ancient Kurdish city located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It is surrounded by many villages which have positively affected the lifestyle of the city. Generally, it is considered as an agricultural area with many vital products (in 1923 it was noted as a centre for tobacco). The city is located between the two lofty mountains of Bawaji and Bijhar (Haibat-Sultan). Historically, Koya is famous for arts, music and poetry and possesses the Bawaji music assembly which is a well-known music team in the Kurdistan region.

The request is attached to the report for the committee’s consideration.
